ARTS 4362 - Global Baroque ArtCredit Hours: 3 Lecture: 3 Lab: 0
This course will examine the Baroque style in seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century artistic production in Europe and beyond through the collection of Rienzi, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s house museum for European decorative arts. By engaging with material histories of the decorative arts, objects made to be both functional and ornamental, we will examine how political power, European colonial projects, religious enthusiasm, and cultural hybridity were expressed and resisted in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. We will also learn about the importance of museum educators to the public humanities and gain experience crafting narratives about the objects in Rienzi’s collection.
