To be employed in the State of Texas as an Early Intervention Specialist, individuals must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and have at least 18 hours of course credit relevant to early childhood intervention and early childhood special education. The 15-hour certificate in Early Intervention offered by the UHCL College of Education contributes to the foundational course requirements specific to Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education. With this foundation, plus one other 3-hour course relevant to early childhood intervention and early childhood special education, individuals become eligible for employment, empowering them to pursue their career goals. They will then complete the ECI credentialing process through Texas Health and Human Services.
The 15-hour Early Childhood Intervention Certificate offered by the UHCL College of Education meets foundational course requirements for Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education. This program is a collaboration between the Early Childhood and Special Education departments. Professionals in early childhood intervention work together with families and other service providers to support the development of young children with special needs in their everyday experiences. The coursework covers essential topics, including special education law, child development, family collaboration, conducting developmental screenings and assessments, progress monitoring, service delivery, and intervention strategies. This certificate is particularly beneficial for individuals in the fields of early childhood education, psychology, and social work.
