Management Information Systems, B.S. Degree Map  

 The Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems is designed to prepare the next generation of digital leaders by teaching them how to solve complex business problems using advanced technology. Students gain the essential skills needed to analyze organizational needs and implement the intelligent, data-driven systems that power modern industry. 


The degree coursework integrates core business foundations in fields like accounting and finance with specialized information systems training in areas such as programming, databases and enterprise systems, artificial intelligence, and project management.  The curriculum includes hands-on experience with data analytics and the application of artificial intelligence for modern enterprise environments with courses focusing on AI fundamentals, data analytics, machine learning, and applied AI.  


This comprehensive coursework prepares students to pursue high-impact careers as systems analyst, data analyst, AI specialist, digital transformation specialist, and project manager across diverse sectors including energy, healthcare, and finance.

 

The Management Information Systems major leads to a Bachelor of Science degree which includes a minimum of 57 upper-level (33XX and 43XX) hours and a total of 120 hours in order to complete the baccalaureate degree.

Communication (6 hours)


Choose TWO courses from the UHCL core approved list.  

Mathematics (3 hours)


Choose ONE course from the UHCL core approved list.  

  • MATH 1324  recommended for this requirement.  This course is required for this major.

Life and Physical Sciences (6 hours)


Choose TWO courses from the UHCL core approved list.  

Language, Philosophy and Culture (3 hours)


Choose ONE course from the UHCL core approved list.  

Creative Arts (3 hours)


Choose ONE course from the UHCL core approved list.  

American History (6 hours)


Choose TWO courses from the UHCL core approved list.  

Government/Political Science (6 hours)


Choose TWO courses from the UHCL core approved list.  

Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 hours)


Choose ONE course from the UHCL core approved list.  

  • ECON 2301  recommended for this requirement.  This course is required for all business majors. 

Component Area Option (6 hours)


Choose SIX hours from the UHCL core approved list.   

  • Two 1-hour Life and Physical Science Labs are required co-requisites for the chosen science courses.

Field of Study - Business Administration


Undergraduate Field of Study (24 hours)

All courses in the Field of Study must be completed with a grade of “C-” or higher, unless a transfer student has completed their Business Administration and Management Field of Study at another Texas public institution.  

Additional Information


ECON 2301  (component 080) and MATH 1324  (component 020) are also recommended for Texas Common Core components.

UHCL Designation


University of Houston-Clear Lake designates the following two courses as necessary to complete the Field of Study

Business Core (27 Hours)


The following courses, or their approved equivalents, constitute the Business Core and are required of all business students. No more than six hours of grades in the range of D+, D or D- are permitted in upper-level (33XX and 43XX) Business Core Requirement.

Elective Requirement (3 hours)


Any upper-level (33XX or 43XX) ISAM course beyond required courses already taken.

Graduation Requirements


  • Students must complete the final 30 semester hours of 3000- and 4000-level coursework in residence at UHCL
  • Students must complete a minimum of 12 semester credit hours of upper-level (3000-4000 level) coursework: (1) in the major and (2) in residence at UHCL
  • Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.000 on coursework completed at UHCL with grades of “C” or better on at least 30 hours of resident upper-level work. Grades of “C-” or below cannot be applied toward the 30 hours of resident upper-level work
