Teaching with Life Science 7-12 Certification, M.A.T.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed for individuals seeking both a graduate degree and Texas teacher certification in an area specified by the Texas Administrative Code. This program prepares candidates through rigorous coursework and practical experience to become effective educators.

Program Highlights:

  • Earn a Master of Arts in Teaching degree and a Texas teaching certificate.
  • Complete 37–40 credit hours of Educator Preparation Program (EPP) coursework aligned with your certification area.
  • Participate in a clinical teaching assignment or internship.
  • Successfully pass all required TExES certification exams.

The MAT degree plan leads to teacher certification in the selected content area and grade span.

Degree Requirements


Required MAT Courses


There will be two options for MAT Clinical Teaching requirement.  

  • Option 1: Traditional Graduate Clinical Teaching (3 hours - one semester)
    • ​​​​​​​TCED 6733 Graduate Clinical Teaching
  • Option 2: Teacher of Record/Internship Clinical Teaching (6 hours over two semesters - 3 hours per semester)

Electives (6 hours)


Select 6 hours of electives in consultation with academic advisor.
