School Library and Information Science, M.S. — Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) Specialization
The Master of Science in School Library and Information Science with a specialization in Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) prepares students for state certification as school librarians and provides advanced knowledge and practical skills in technology applications, learning theory, performance technology, and the systematic design of technology-based instruction. This specialization equips graduates to design, implement, and evaluate digital learning environments and technology-enhanced instructional materials. Graduates are prepared to lead as school librarians, technology coordinators, and digital learning specialists in educational, corporate, and organizational settings. A passing score on the School Librarian state assessment is required prior to recommendation for certification. The degree plan consists of 42–43 semester credit hours.

Students who meet the graduate admissions requirements to the College of Education (see Graduate Admissions Requirements) must meet additional requirements prior to being admitted to the School Librarian program. Each applicant must:

  • Have a GPA of 2.750 over the last 60 hours.
  • Provide proof of a valid Texas teaching certificate.
  • Provide a teacher service record.
  • Pay the TEA Admission fee.

New students must meet with assigned faculty advisor before enrolling in any courses.

Additional Information


  • Practicum application form must be completed and submitted by June 8 for fall semester and October 1 for spring semester in order to enroll in SLIS 6739. Students will be eligible to register for SLIS 6739 after they have successfully completed at least 24 hours of the SLIS core courses included in the master’s degree.
  • All placement sites must have an approved UHCL Agreement of Affiliation on record with the Center for the Professional Development of Teachers office prior to beginning the practicum.

 

Additional Information


Students not passing the School Librarian state assessment by the final semester of this plan must also enroll in and successfully complete this course.
