MATH 3301 - History of Mathematics Before AD 500

Credit Hours: 3 Lecture: 3 Lab: 0

A survey of the history of mathematics from the Paleolithic Period until approximately AD 500. Students will explore concepts of numeration and numeration systems, as well as ancient understands of algebra, geometry, and methods of calculation. Early Greek mathematics will be explored, including the birth of the indirect proof, basic elements of logic, and elementary number theory. Students will also study ancient problems involving Euclidean tools and closely examine Euclid’s Elements. The work and life of major mathematicians will span from Thales to Hypatia. No prior experience of the history of mathematics is required.

Prerequisites: MATH 1314  or MATH 1324  or MATH 1332 .
