Kinesiology, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Kinesiology provides a robust scientific foundation and develops marketable skills in areas such as strength and conditioning, exercise testing, and prescription, supporting clients ranging from elite athletes to individuals with chronic diseases and disabilities. A distinctive feature of this program is the opportunity for undergraduates to participate in original research and gain clinical experience through on-campus practicum placements. Students who complete the Athletic Training concentration are eligible to sit for licensure in Texas, preparing them for roles in various sports and clinical settings.
The Rehabilitation Sciences concentration offers specialized pathways, equipping students with the prerequisite coursework required for admission to master’s and doctoral programs in Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant studies, Occupational Therapy, and Chiropractic. Public Health students complete foundational courses that prepare them for careers in this essential and expanding field. Notably, the program is designated as a STEM program (CIP Code 26.0908).

Choose ONE course from the UHCL core approved list. - PSYC 2301 is required for all Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Occupational Therapy, Pre-Physician’s Assistant, and Pre-Chiropractic students.
- ECON 2301 or ECON 2302 is required for students obtaining teacher certification.
Component Area Options (6 hours)
Choose SIX hours from the UHCL core approved list. - BIOL 2101 and BIOL 2102 are required co-requisites for the life and physical science courses. Lab class is recommended for Anatomy and Physiology. Students may request permission from the program to substitute other Biology, Physics, or Chemistry classes for the life sciences requirement.
- COMM 1315 and PSYC 1100 recommended for this requirement.
College Core Requirements (6 hours)
30 hours of upper-level credit must be a “C” or better. External Department Requirement (3 hours)
Students can complete any upper level Anthropology, Geography, or Sociology course for this requirement, but the following courses are recommended. Core Requirements (3 hours)

KINE 4370 requires instructor permission and has pre-requisite of KINE 4301 . Students must complete KINE 4309 or KINE 4376 as a culminating practical experience. Concentration Area (15 or more hours, depending on selection)
The following KINE courses require instructor permission and controlled access: KINE 4309 , KINE 4370 , KINE 4379 and KINE 4391 . Some non-KINE courses have pre-requisites. Strength and Conditioning
Choose 15 hours: Students must complete two of the following courses: KINE 4307, 4322, or 4324. Athletic Training
The Athletic Training concentration offers a pathway for students to become eligible for licensure as athletic trainers in Texas through the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration. To qualify, students must complete all required coursework and accumulate 1,800 supervised field hours with a licensed athletic trainer across various athletic and clinical settings. At least 1,500 of these hours must be completed in residence through enrollment in KINE 4378 over five long semesters. Graduates of this program are not eligible for NATABOC certification or licensure in other states. Exercise Science

- A 3.00 GPA must be maintained for admission to UTMB’s PT Plan.
- A 3.00 GPA must be maintained for all science and math courses.
- No grade below a “C” will be accepted by UTMB’s PT Plan for any pre-requisite course.
